OsmondCocoa Design Window

Osmond

Design is done in a document window. The parts of a document window are shown in the images below.

The first two pictures show the left and right portions of the tool bar at the top of the window. The tool bar contains many tools that let you manipulate objects such as parts, pads, and connecting traces. You select a tool by clicking on the tool. Many tools also have options that you can change by double-clicking the tool. A description of each tool can be found in the Tools section of this document.

Directly below the tool bar a message field provides useful information. As you move the cursor over pins, the message field lists the pin name. If the pin is part of some signal, the signal name is also listed. On the right, the message field displays the X and Y coordinates of your cursor in either mils or millimeters.

The bottom left of the design window looks like the picture shown above. The segmented control lets you select the current layer. Segments A1 and A2 are for the two Auxiliary Layers. Segments S1 and S2 are for the front and back silkscreen layers. Segments M1 and M2 are for the front and back solder-mask layers. Finally, the segments starting at 1 and continuing to the right are for the signal layers. There will be as many of these segments as there are layers in your PC board.

Clicking on a segment makes the corresponding layer the current layer. The current layer is always visible and appears above all other layers. In general, all editing is performed on the current layer. Other layers may also be visible, as set by the Layers Visible... command in the View menu. You can also toggle the visibility of layers by clicking the corresponding control segment while holding down the Option key.

As a shortcut, you can select a layer by using the keys 1 through 0 on the keyboard. Pressing 1, for example, selects layer 1 and pressing 2 selects layer 2. Pressing 0 selects layer 10 (if you have 10 layers). Of course, if you have more than 10 layers you can only select the layers above 10 by clicking the corresponding segment in the segmented control.

The bottom right of the design window contains a segmented control that allows you save and retrieve view and magnification settings. If you click on a button while holding down the Option key, the current view and magnification setting is saved in that button. Then, when you click the button normally, the saved view and magnification setting is restored. You can specify up to six favorite view and magnification settings and easily cycle among them.
